TEAM AMSOIL OFFSHORE SCORES A PODIUM FINISH AT ST. CLAIR
Team AMSOIL engaged in a fierce battle for first place in the 17th Annual St. Clair River Classic presented by the Blue Water Offshore Racing Association. This was the second stop of the 2011 AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series sanctioned by OPA.
The entire town of St. Clair, Michigan is involved in putting on this huge festival event. It is estimated that the attendance exceeded 125,000 spectators and fans lining the River’s edge, mile-long festival. AMSOIL had a huge presence as the title series sponsor with the AMSOIL Offshore Team and AMSOIL display booths placed at the main entrance to the event. The Team also debuted a new T-shirt design for sale, which was very popular with race fans at the site.
Preparations were made on Friday on the AMSIOL Skater to get ready for Saturday’s Test sessions. Team AMSOIL ran nearly 100 miles testing to resolve an engine guardian problem. During the test sessions, one of Team AMSOIL’s main competitors, Team PhoenixParts.com blew an engine due to an oil pressure problem. Team AMSOIL offered owner Raymond Contreras the use of its spare engine so they could make the race. Team AMSOIL assisted the Team PheonixParts.com crew in changing the engine.
The Cat Lite class raced in the main event on Sunday which was the last race of the day. Being that Team AMSOIL won the last race in Sunny Isles beach, the starting order was reversed and Team AMSOIL was assigned the outside lane. When the green flag went up, a 65 mile battle followed with Team AMSOIL closely behind Team PhoenixParts.com. The boats were very evenly matched but the lead boat had the advantage with controlling the racing line. Team AMSOIL made several attempts to get around the lead boat. Pulling up close to Team PhoenixParts.com in turns 3 and 4, Team AMSOIL hooked the boat in the turn, sliding sideways and narrowly avoiding a flip. Paul Whittier and Bob Teague were able to keep the boat from going over but were concerned that the skegs had been ripped off the drives. Accordingly Team AMSOIL proceeded with a little caution to the next turn not knowing if the boat would turn at all. As it ended up, the boat was OK and full speed racing was resumed, but not in enough time to catch the lead boat before the end of the race.
Team AMSOIL congratulates Raymond Contreras and Harry Clack on a fine race and is looking forward to another great battle between the two Skaters.
In addition to presenting the AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series, AMSOIL has stepped up to title sponsor the production of a new television program by the same crew that covered the SnowCross series. Cameras followed the Team AMSOIL members throughout the weekend to bring viewers a behind the scenes look at offshore powerboat racing. Coverage of the AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series is set to air on the Versus Network this November.
