TEAM AMSOIL MAKES INTERNATIONAL SPLASH IN PORT HURON, MICHIGAN
Team AMSOIL Offshore racing and the AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series made their international debut in the 4th race of the season, jointly hosted by Port Huron, Michigan and Sarnia in Ontario, Canada. The race was held on the Saint Clair River, just a dozen miles north of the AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series Round 3 race hosted by Saint Clair, Michigan. Team AMSOIL was thrilled by the turnout of enthusiastic offshore racing fans from both sides of the border for the inaugural running of the International Offshore Grand Prix.
Although close in proximity to Saint Clair, the Port Huron course presented racers with a whole new set of challenges. The course was a 4-mile right hand oval, with the upriver turn tucked into Canada’s Sarnia Bay, and the downriver turn ravaged by a swift current. The upriver turn had two seawalls and multiple channel markers that demanded well considered line and lane choices, especially while multiple boats negotiated the turn simultaneously. To add to the drama, the start/finish line formed a left hand kink in the Canadian straightaway. Veteran Throttleman Bob Teague was joined by his son John Teague to handle the driving duties for the weekend, working together to negotiate the tight and tricky course.
Bob and John used the Saturday testing window effectively. First, they were able to get a lay of the land and any tricks the current would play on the surface of the course. Second, they gauged what speeds could be achieved using different setups while negotiating the obstacles and natural shape of the river. Finally, since this was the first race held in Port Huron, Bob and the Team were thrilled to introduce the Mayor of the city, Pauline Repp, to offshore powerboat racing by placing her in the driver seat for a couple laps around the river!
Following testing, the entire fleet of race boats idled over to Canada’s Sarnia Bay for a “meet and greet,” and autograph session, then idled back to the states for another meet and greet with the fans.
On race day, Team AMSOIL competed in both races under Class 1 and Super Cat Lite. Class 1 is the fastest bracket racing class, boats having unlimited power with a speed limit of 115 MPH. Racing against two supercharged catamarans with 1,600 horsepower and 2,100 horsepower, respectively, Bob and John enjoyed putting on a show while nipping on the overpowered competition’s heels. In the second race, Team AMSOIL ran unopposed in Super Cat Lite, but mixed it up with the Super Vee’s in their start. Highlights included passing the Strictly Business Fountain 35 within 6 feet of both the boat and start/finish pylon, as well as repeatedly buzzing the Canadian seawall and American breakwater at full race speed. Ultimately, the dominant AMSOIL Offshore Skater lapped the entire field of other competitors during the 75-mile final event.
After the warm reception from the city officials of both cities and the masses of fans from both countries, Team AMSOIL is excited for next year’s 2nd Annual International Offshore Grand Prix.
In addition to presenting the AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series, AMSOIL has stepped up to title sponsor the production of a new television program by the same crew that covered the SnowCross series. Cameras followed the Team AMSOIL members throughout the weekend to bring viewers a behind the scenes look at offshore powerboat racing. Coverage of the AMSOIL Offshore Powerboat Series is set to air on the Versus Network this November.
