Teague Power Dominates the 71st Annual Catalina Ski Race

The 71st running of the Catalina Water Ski Race, dubbed ‘The World’s Greatest Ski Race’ was Saturday, July 20, 2019.  The official event website highlights the ski race’s “rich 70 year history, quality of competition, and challenge of the open ocean” as some of the reasons the event has earned worldwide notoriety over the decades.

The Catalina Water Ski Race Facebook page explains that the event is a “62-mile race on water skis to Catalina Island and back. Up to 80 teams with boats from 19 to 43 feet towing skiers at speeds up to 95 mph. Horsepower from 250 to 3000. Skiers age 12 to 78 from Australia, Great Britain, Belgium, France, Austria, Denmark, New Zealand, and Spain.”  Spectators can stage on both land and on boats out of Long Beach, CA and enjoy seeing the start / finish line at the Queen Mary.

Teague Custom Marine is proud to have had several Teague-powered entries in this year’s Catalina Ski Race.  The powerhouse “Nordic Racing” team of Driver Randy Davis, Throttleman Steve Davis, Skier Todd Haig, and Observer Dennis Hall were the force to be reckoned with in the 43′ Nordic #191 entry, powered by twin TCM 1275 / 1500 SCi’s.  Davis and team won the Men’s Open class and secured the 1st Place Overall finish with a total elapsed time of 50min 41.04sec.  The power plants in this boat were a pair of Mercury Racing 1025 / 1200 SCi’s that received our Mercury Racing 1075 Stage IV Whipple Superchargers upgrade.  The dual computer setup can accommodate use of either pump gas or race gas.  Teague Custom Marine completed the engine work on site and then dyno tested earlier this year before delivery to Nordic Boats.

One of the TCM 1275 / 1500 SCi engines that powered the Nordic Racing #191 boat, built by Teague Custom Marine, prepared for dyno testing before being delivered to Nordic Boats.

Teague Custom Marine is excited to offer engine upgrade packages for several Mercury Racing engine models. These upgrade packages are complete engine rebuild and upgrade programs that maximize your engine’s potential with increased overall performance and durability and are designed for use with 91 octane pump gas.

Another Team Teague podium finish is awarded to the twin TCM 825 EFI-powered 42′ Fountain “Extreme Insanity” that is owned and operated by Sean Moore.  With an elapsed time of 54min 49.01sec, the team clenched 3rd Place Overall and 1st Place in the Intermediate Men class.  Driver Sean Moore, Skier Cameron Osborne, Observer Greg Houston, and Navigator Colby Barritt knew that they would have some stiff competition.  Navigator Colby Barritt recounted, “We took the hole shot and crossed out of the breakwater next to and slightly behind Randy Davis in their Nordic…Our plan was to let them lead.  We ran with them, averaging 73MPH (GPS) almost to the island until [our skier] Cameron had an old injury flare up.”  At that point, the team made the decision to run slower in an effort to still finish the race.  It was a solid decision as Sean Moore and team still came in 3rd Place overall and the next entry was about 2 minutes behind them at the finish line.

The TCM 825 EFI is the flagship of the Teague Custom Marine engine line-up and hundreds are out in the field, still running strong with hundreds of hours on them.  The ‘Extreme Insanity’ team is proof of this, as Barritt added, “Engines ran great!  Those [TCM] 825’s are arguably the lowest maintenance packages out there.  Change the oil, pour in some fuel and hit the ignition.”

Other Teague Custom Marine clients in the running include Driver Gene Welter in his 38′ Fountain “Geri’s Beach House”, earning a 3rd Place finish in the Intermediate Men class and 8th Place Overall and John Stewart in his twin TCM 620 HP-powered 38′ Fountain “Ragged Edge” finishing with a 3rd Place in the Veteran Men class and 17th overall.  This year’s Catalina Ski Race had a total of 44 teams finish.

Congratulations to all teams involved!  See you at the races…
