MSD Ignition Box
PROBLEMS

Dear Bob:

Q. I have a 27’ Eliminator Daytona that eats
MSD 6AL ignition boxes. I have owned this
boat nine years and I have had six MSD 6AL
ignition boxes fail in that time. My boat is
not some high tech “Space X Raptor thing.” It is just a Dart big block with a Delphi ECM and a Whipple quad rotor system. The drive
is an IMCO with the dual down shaft. The prop is a five-blade.

I noticed that you put the MSD boxes on a mount on the front of your engines. I am
wondering if the reason is heat related. I think it looks better on the rear of the motor.
Mine is on the back of the engine on a billet bracket. I checked and changed the coil,
ignition wires, power cables, and grounds, but not the mounting location. I am still
having the problem.

Should I consider relocating the MSD box or do you think that I am cooking the ignition
box for some reason. Please help!

Overflowing Positivity From The Biggest Big Cat Poker Run In Years

As seen online August, 16th 2022 Speed on the Water.

Written by Jason Johnson and Matt Trulio

With pre-registration right around 80 boats, the organizers behind this year’s Big Cat Poker Run in Northern California were excited to build upon the event’s 2021 rebirth of sorts following the pandemic and leadership changes. What they didn’t expect was for the participation numbers to exceed expectations, reaching 95 boats and increasing the estimated attendance from 250 people to more than 370 in total.

BBC Gen V & VI
Oil Bypass

Dear Bob:

Q. I have a question regarding the GM Gen V 454 block oil bypass when running an adapter on the oil filter mounting pad for a remote oil cooler and filter. There are 2 oil bypass valves in the engine block. Does either one of these valves need to be removed when running an adapter plate in the original oil filter location? Does either one of these valves need to be changed to a higher pressure valve? It is so confusing on the internet regarding information on this subject. I don’t want to make a mistake that will damage the engines that I am putting in my boat. I am restoring an older Scarab which originally had Mark IV engines, so I don’t have the original marine engines to compare them to. Thank you.

29 FEVER Props

Dear Bob:

Q. I have a 2004 29′ Fountain Fever with twin 377 Mercury Racing Blue Scorpion engines. I am currently running Bravo 1 propellers that I had “lab finished.” The result is that I now have too much prop slip. At the peak rpm of 5,200, my boat can achieve 79 mph. I was considering the Bravo 1 FS 32″ pitch propeller. Is that a good option?
