John Cosker had a special passenger for a speedonthewater.com aerial photo shoot during the 2020 Lake of the Ozarks Shootout in Central Missouri in late August. The Mystic Powerboats founder and owner was joined by his 22-year-old daughter, Rachel, in the cockpit of an M4200 luxury performance center console.
For Cosker, it was one of countless helicopter photo shoots, just another day at the office running boats of his own creation for the camera. But for his daughter, it was a first.
“Having the helicopter right next to me was hilarious,” she said. “My father kept saying, ‘Just keep smiling.’ It was super cool.”
Equipped with a bachelor’s degree in business administration with an emphasis on Family Enterprise Management from Stetson University, Rachel Cosker works on the business and finance sides of the company. She is one of several high-performance marine industry legacy daughters who have joined their family’s businesses in various capacities, including 24-year-old Taylor Scism of MTI in Wentzville, Mo., and 26-year-old Jamie Lusero of Performance Boat Center in Osage Beach, Mo.
“I plan all of the events, manage the social media platforms, run the apparel line and assist with sales,” said Scism, who is the company’s marketing manager and sales associate and the daughter of MTI founder Randy Scism.
Before joining the company full time a few years ago, Taylor Scism earned a bachelor’s degree at the University of Mississippi, where she studied marketing, corporate relations and manufacturing engineering.
The daughter of Performance Boat Center’s Mark and Rachel Waddington and a graduate of the University of Nebraska with a bachelor’s degree in marketing and management, Lusero is the multi-brand, full-service dealership’s human resources and marketing manager. Like Scism, she has an expansive job description.
“I do everything that pertains to both those things for all of our businesses, as well as a little bit of everything else,” she said, then laughed. “I did all the backend work to plan Offshore At The Ozarks and I book all the bands at High Tide and Redhead Lakeside Grill during the summer. I have my fingers in a little bit of all of it.”
And then there is Cherilyn Noack, the vice president of marketing and daughter of Teague Custom Marine founder Bob Teague—in Valencia, Calif. At just 35 years old, she’s already a high-performance marine industry veteran. She started working for the company full time in 2007 after working there part time throughout her college career at California State University at Northridge.
“In a nutshell, I’m in charge of all of our marketing and advertising campaigns across all channels—ad banners, magazine ads, digital ads, working on event prep and social media,” she said. “I do all of our social media content—that job never sleeps. I also coordinate our line of Teague Racing Apparel. I also help with our website, maintaining products, adding items, changing info on the homepage, blog articles and so on. And along with Adrian and Kellie at Teague Custom Marine, I help maintain the online catalog in house.”
Administrative tasks, customer service on the consumer and boat builder sides and occasionally helping her mother, Andrea, who is the company’s controller, with accounting also falls on her plate. Noack balances her more-than-full-time job with raising two boys—six-year-old Cru and three-year-old Nixon with her talented husband, Josh, who works at Teague Custom Marine in the rigging and service department.
“We have a great team here—there are 16 of us total,” she said. “I’m grateful to work alongside my parents and my husband. Their work ethic is incredible.”
Asked if she planned to keep the family business going after her parents retire, if such a thing is possible for Bob and Andrea Teague, Noack offered just one word.
“Absolutely,” she said.
